The Bahama

The Bahama islands were occupied by the Arawak and Lucayans, a part of the Arawakan-speaking Taíno, for some centuries.Christopher Columbus was the main European to see the islands, making his most memorable landfall in the “New World” in 1492 when he arrived on the island of San Salvador. Afterward, the Spanish transported the local Lucayans to Hispaniola and oppressed them there, after which the Bahama islands were generally abandoned from 1513 until 1648, practically generally local Bahamians having been effectively gotten rid of for subjugation or having passed on from illnesses that Europeans carried with them from Europe. In 1649, English homesteaders from Bermuda, known as the Eleutheran Travelers, chose the island of Eleuthera.
